Nonimmigrant Visas
A temporary working visa, or status, is
utilized by an employer who seeks the work of a foreign national for a
fixed period of time. There are approximately 30 different categories
of nonimmigrant or temporary visas, seven of which are commonly used by
U.S. employers. A nonimmigrant working status expires after the
statutory maximum period is reached. Depending on the nonimmigrant
category, the maximum period may range from one to seven years, with
limited exceptions. The following is a brief description of some of the
most widely-utilized nonimmigrant working visas:
H-1B H-2B
L-1A/L-1B E-1/E-2
E-3 O-1
P-1 TN
There are also many other types of
nonimmigrant visas. Each nonimmigrant visa classification might allow a
foreign national to enter the U.S. to study, visit, attend a
conference/seminar, receiving training, etc.
